Job Summary

The Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing the nursing unit, ensuring high-quality care and compliance with healthcare regulations. This role involves managing nursing staff, coordinating patient care, conducting audits, and ensuring a safe environment for patients and employees. The Nurse Manager serves as a key liaison between medical staff, patients, and their families while maintaining operational efficiency on a 24-hour basis.

Key Responsibilities

Unit Management & Compliance

  • Manages the nursing unit to ensure safe and efficient operations 24/7.
  • Conducts environmental rounds and follows up on resolutions.
  • Reviews medical records to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations.
  • Ensures timely completion and submission of unit reports.
  • Assesses and ensures the availability of necessary equipment.

Patient Care & Clinical Oversight

  • Oversees the care and management of patients/residents to ensure appropriate treatment.
  • Facilitates interdisciplinary care planning meetings and assists in developing care plans.
  • Collaborates with medical and interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Conducts audits and ensures adherence to clinical guidelines.
  • Participates in patient discharge planning.
  • Responds to and resolves patient/resident/family concerns and complaints.

Incident Management & Investigations

  • Ensures all accidents/incidents are documented and recommends corrective actions.
  • Notifies Director of Nursing Services (D.N.S.) and Security of any alleged abuse.
  • Participates in investigations and gathers documentation for NYS DOH and internal inquiries.
  • Ensures resolution of incidents in compliance with policies and regulations.

Staffing & Leadership

  • Develops work schedules and ensures adequate staffing levels.
  • Communicates staffing needs and scheduling requirements.
  • Manages staff performance, providing orientation, coaching, training, and corrective action as needed.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources for recruitment and selection of staff.

Emergency Response & Clinical Management

  • Evaluates admissions to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Assesses residents after occurrences and ensures appropriate care.
  • Oversees central line and intravenous therapy administration.
  • Responds to emergency codes and provides appropriate direction.

Administrative & Budgetary Responsibilities

  • Utilizes corporate resources, including HR, Compliance, Legal, and Finance, as necessary.
  • Ensures proper staffing and resource allocation to support department operations.
  • Monitors productivity and participates in annual budget preparation.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: BSN from an accredited school of nursing preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of 4 years of clinical experience, including at least 2 years in a management role, preferably in a geriatric setting.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of healthcare compliance and regulatory requirements.
